Pre-College Outreach in partnership with Links, Inc Raritan Valley Chapter Health Links hosted a 3 part Health Links Series for 50 Piscataway Middle School students learn more about about variety of Non-typical Health Professions including but not limited to Athletic Trainer, Nutritionists, Biomedical Engineering, etc.

October Highlights
This October, Upward Bound Math-Science scholars explored higher education in North Jersey with visits to St. Peter’s University and Stevens Institute of Technology, gaining insights into campus life, admissions, financial aid, and majors. The month ended with a celebration at the Rutgers Homecoming Game, where they learned about the history of college football, joined fan traditions, and enjoyed the live game excitement—a perfect wrap-up to a month of exploration and inspiration.
November Saturday Academy
On November 16, 2024, Upward Bound Math-Science scholars and Pre-College scholars had the opportunity to participate in the November Saturday Academy. Scholars had the opportunity to participate in the Rutgers Learning Center workshops titled “Planning Your Success”. They had the opportunity to hear from a Perth Amboy Psychologist panel and learn about STEM and mental health opportunities. Scholars also participated in a STEM Exposed Summit, where seniors were able to obtain scholarships.
Fall 2024 College Tour Week
During Fall 2024 College Tour Week, Upward Math-Science Scholars and Pre-College scholars had the opportunity to explore higher education and gain insights into college life.
December Saturday Academy
On December 7, 2024, Upward Bound Math-Science and Pre-College scholars participated in the December Saturday Academy. Scholars attended their grade-based college preparation seminars, where they designed college tours, explored careers, and worked on senior portfolios.

Register now for the Upward Bound Math-Science Pre-College Spring 2025 Family Resource Conference on Saturday, January 25, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Guest speakers from HESAA, Rockell Bartoli, and more.
Scholar and family (one parent/legal guardian) attendance is mandatory.
Prepare to Become a Future Leader
The Pre-College Outreach and Upward Bound Math-Science programs are designed to motivate first-generation students to successfully graduate high school, prepare for college admissions, and attend the college or university of their choice. Scholars gain the necessary skills to become college graduates and leaders of tomorrow.
Rutgers Upward Bound Math-Science (RUBMS) is a pre-college program designed to assist and motivate students to successfully graduate from high school, prepare for college admission, and to successfully complete their baccalaureate degree. Upward Bound is a year-round program that offers academic year workshops such as SAT & NJSLA preparation, cultural activities, college tours, college planning, as well as a host of other programs including individualized tutoring, student counseling, and focused preparation for major’s and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M). Upward Bound Math-Science offers a mandatory summer institute on campus to prepare students for college life by taking college level classes, as well as experiencing a college life.
Eligibility:
- Have completed 8th grade and are currently in 9th, 10th,or 11th grade
- Reside in New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, or Plainfield
- Be either first generation to attend college in their family, or meet low-income requirements, as defined by the federal government
- Students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States
- Students who have at least a “C” average and need academic support
- Be willing to commute to campus daily via parent/guardian or bus provided by program
- Students who intend to pursue a college education
- Students who complete the application, personal statement, and interview process.

In 2024, Nicol Montano made a significant impact in her community through her volunteer work. As a reward for her dedicated service, Nicol was selected in a raffle to participate in the Shop with a Cop program in Perth Amboy.
Shop with a Cop is a heartwarming initiative where police officers and volunteers help children with their holiday shopping at no cost to the families. On the event day, Nicol was provided with a $250 Visa gift card for shopping and was paired with a police officer to guide her through the experience.

Katherine Baez is a junior in the Upward Bound Math-Science program. She is interested in majoring in Biological Sciences. Katherine has demonstrated self-advocacy by contacting the Rutgers School of Biological and Environmental Sciences to obtain more information and better prepare for her future track in biological sciences.

To be eligible for Upward Bound Math-Science, you must:
- Rising 9th grader through 11th grade

You can visit your school counselor or contact us via email at upwardbound@echo.rutgers.edu. We want you to attend Open House Session at your school to learn more about our program and how to complete our online application.Online Applications open mid-September and close mid-December each year.

Upward Math-Science at Rutgers–New Brunswick is a year-round project that offers academic year workshops such as SAT/ACT preparation, cultural activities, college tours, college planning, series of specialized courses, STEM experiences, workshops, programs, and a mandatory six-week Summer Institute where students are exposed to college-level classes and student life led by highly trained faculty and staff.

One-on-one or Group tutoring sessions are available on Saturdays during the academic year from September to May in the following subjects: Writing/Composition, Mathematics, Science, SAT Prep, etc.

Academic Year
Academic Year positions are designed to support students while they strive to excel during each school year. The various positions include part-time tutors, grade-based Seminar Instructor as well as Federal Work Study: Office Assistant and Tutor Mentors.
Summer Institute
Part-time Program Mentors, Tutors and Instructor positions are available. Each position is designed to provide support for the program's participants as program mentors, directly in the classroom as instructors, as well as supplemental support as tutors.
