Pre-College Outreach and Upward Bound Math-Science

Prepare to Become a Future Leader

The Pre-College Outreach and Upward Bound Math-Science programs are designed to motivate first-generation students to successfully graduate high school, prepare for college admissions, and attend the college or university of their choice. Scholars gain the necessary skills to become college graduates and leaders of tomorrow.

Rutgers Upward Bound Math-Science (RUBMS) is a pre-college program designed to assist and motivate students to successfully graduate from high school, prepare for college admission, and to successfully complete their baccalaureate degree. Upward Bound is a year-round program that offers academic year workshops such as SAT & NJSLA preparation, cultural activities, college tours, college planning, as well as a host of other programs including individualized tutoring, student counseling, and focused preparation for major’s and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M). Upward Bound Math-Science offers a mandatory summer institute on campus to prepare students for college life by taking college level classes, as well as experiencing a college life.

Eligibility:

  • Have completed 8th grade and are currently in 9th, 10th,or 11th grade
  • Reside in New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, or Plainfield
  • Be either first generation to attend college in their family, or meet low-income requirements, as defined by the federal government
  • Students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States
  • Students who have at least a “C” average and need academic support  
  • Be willing to commute to campus daily via parent/guardian or bus provided by program
  • Students who intend to pursue a college education
  • Students who complete the application, personal statement, and interview process.

Scholars Spotlight

  • Andrea Herrera is a senior at New Brunswick Health Science High School as well as the Public Relations Specialist for the Student Ambassadors. Andrea goes above and beyond to assist her peers in the Upward Bound Math-Science program. During the New Brunswick Health Science High School onsite visits, Andrea set the expectations for her UBMS peers by sharing her college acceptances with the underclassmen. She currently has over 15 college acceptances, including Rutgers University.

     

  • Carlos Nava is an Upward Bound Math-Science junior scholar from New Brunswick Health Science and Technology High School. Carlos is an active junior scholar who participates in programming and events including our virtual science fairs and the UBMS Winter STEM Challenge. Shout out to Carlos!

  • To be eligible for Upward Bound Math-Science, you must:

    • Rising 9th grader through 11th grade
    • Be either first generation to attend college in their family or meet the low-income requirement as defined by the federal government
    • Students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States
    • Students who have at least a “C” average
    • Students who intend to pursue a college education
    • Students who complete the application, personal statement, and interview process
    • Attend New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, or Plainfield Public Schools
  • You can visit your school counselor or contact us via email at upwardbound@echo.rutgers.edu. We want you to attend Open House Session at your school to learn more about our program and how to complete our online application.Online Applications open mid-September and close mid-December each year.

  • Upward Math-Science at Rutgers–New Brunswick is a year-round project that offers academic year workshops such as SAT/ACT preparation, cultural activities, college tours, college planning, series of specialized courses, STEM experiences, workshops, programs, and a mandatory six-week Summer Institute where students are exposed to college-level classes and student life led by highly trained faculty and staff.

  • One-on-one or Group tutoring sessions are available on Saturdays during the academic year from September to May in the following subjects: Writing/Composition, Mathematics, Science, SAT Prep, etc.

    Academic Year

    Academic Year positions are designed to support students while they strive to excel during each school year. The various positions include part-time tutors, grade-based Seminar Instructor as well as Federal Work Study: Office Assistant and Tutor Mentors.

    Summer Institute

    Part-time Program Mentors, Tutors and Instructor positions are available. Each position is designed to provide support for the program's participants as program mentors, directly in the classroom as instructors, as well as supplemental support as tutors.
