Community Engagement

Engaged Citizens

In 2020, Rutgers–New Brunswick was one of only 119 institutions to receive the prestigious Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, an endorsement given by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The designation marks the second time that Rutgers–New Brunswick was recognized for its exemplary commitment to incorporating community engagement throughout its teaching, research, and co-curricular programming, having originally received the designation in 2010.

Subsequently, in 2016, the university joined with Campus Compact and New Jersey Campus Compact to further interdisciplinary collaboration with our community partners. Currently, the Collaborative Center for Community-Based Research and Service is a member of the New Jersey Campus Compact Civic Leadership Committee that builds resources for high quality community-engaged curricula and opportunities for participation throughout the state.

Our community engagement represents a comprehensive continuum of activities that include multidisciplinary community-engaged teaching, research, and service; recognize diverse human interdependence; co-generate new knowledge through inclusive and reciprocal collaborations; promote ethical social action; and prepare students to be engaged citizens.
