Exploring Future Opportunities: AVID Students Visit SEBS Campus
On Wednesday, March 20th, the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences welcomed a group of eager AVID students to its Marine Science Building for an enriching campus visit. The day began with a warm reception as the Assistant Dean of the School, in her welcome remarks, set the tone for an exciting exploration into the realms of environmental and biological sciences.
Dr. Chitra Ponnusamy, an esteemed figure in the field of Food Sciences, captivated the students' interest with an interesting session. Amidst discussions on the iconic Chips Ahoy! cookies and their packaging, Dr. Ponnusamy shed light on the significance of food science in our future workforce. Her session not only unveiled the secrets behind different colored packaging red and blue cookies, but also emphasized the critical role food science plays in our everyday lives. The highlight of Dr. Ponnusamy's session was undoubtedly the tour of her lab, where students got a firsthand look at the cutting-edge research shaping the future of food technology.
Following this insightful experience, the students were treated to another informative presentation by Dr. Harna Patel and Nicoletta Graf from Plant Sciences. The duo delved into the fascinating world of plant biology, offering valuable insights into the importance of plant research in addressing global challenges. To conclude the visit on a delightful note, the students embarked on a tour of the Floriculture Greenhouse, immersing themselves in the vibrant world of plants and flowers.
Before bidding farewell to the SEBS campus, the students indulged in a well-deserved lunch at Neilson Dining Hall, where they continued to exchange ideas and impressions from their enriching experience. This campus visit not only provided the AVID students with a glimpse into the diverse fields of environmental and biological sciences but also inspired them to envision a future brimming with possibilities in these dynamic fields.
