Changing Our Own Futures: Black Feminist Theory & Criticism

Please join us for “Changing Our Own Futures: Black Feminist Theory & Criticism,” a symposium in honor of the work of Cheryl A. Wall.
Taking our cue from the 1987 conference she organized and documented in the groundbreaking edited volume, Changing Our Own Words: Criticism, Theory, and Writing by Black Women, this symposium gathers an exceptional group of intellectuals to imagine and discuss the future of the field(s) Dr. Wall’s foundational work helped to nurture. We will have the opportunity to engage with exciting new research that pushes the boundaries of Black feminist thought in literary and cultural studies. The symposium will also present roundtables inspired by some of the ways our late colleague’s scholarship, pedagogy, and other professional activities modeled Black feminist praxis and have influenced and supported generations of scholars.
The symposium will convene at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21st, and close on Friday evening, April 22nd. Our keynote, on Thursday afternoon, features a talk by Dr. Farah Jasmine Griffin and is followed by a musical performance by Dr. Melanie Hill. A full program of symposium sessions and participants can be found here.
